The Polaris Lounge in Newark Airport is Amazing
For Christmas, my husband promised me a first-class ticket to Italy, and he most definitely delivered. After cashing in points, miles, and travel credits from canceled corporate trips, my first-class ticket was a bargain. He was so excited for me to try the Polaris lounge (which had been closed due to COVID and just reopened), that he dropped me off at the airport three hours before my departure. And what a great idea that was!
Immediately after setting foot into this exclusive hideaway, the pampering began. As the glass doors closed, the din of airport security lines fell away and I was whisked away to a 27,000 square foot oasis of tranquility. The lounge has quiet rooms where you can sleep, showers, a beautiful bar pouring top-shelf liquor, an a la carte restaurant, and a buffet where you can grab a quick bite.
It took me a long minute to figure out that everything was included. Yep, you heard it. From the liquor to the full menu of the a la carte restaurant, first-class ticket holders pay nothing. It’s not free, of course, as first-class tickets cost upwards of $3200. But what a treat! I felt utterly spoiled.
The Pod Experience
Since my first traumatic flight out of Cuba when I was eight I have been fascinated by airports. Maybe I just love planes. I love watching them take off and land. I associate flying with travel so even the worst flights are filled with joyous expectations. My seat on this plane (1A) was about ten steps behind the cockpit. The newly designed pods are extremely comfortable and private with seats that recline into full beds. The space has a cute table lamp, a huge screen, and luxurious amenities. I was impressed by the cozy blanket, the dual pillows, and the little bag of goodies that included socks, a sleeping mask, skin hydrating mist, earplugs, lip balm, and more. The welcome glass of champagne was nice too.
The menu included prime rib, grilled salmon, and a vegetarian pasta dish. I chose the salmon with risotto after which I extended the seat into a bed and dozed off. Sadly I missed the cheese platter and the ice cream cart. Next time!
I’ve been upgraded to first-class before, but always on the older planes. This brand new aircraft featured upgraded pods which are seriously great. I couldn’t believe how quickly this flight went. Seven hours felt like maybe two. In coach, the flight feels like an eternity.
An hour before landing we were served a hearty breakfast of egg whites and maple sausage with yogurt and fruit. We landed at like 3 AM NYC time, so the caffeine boost was very welcome.
